The
Library contributes significantly in the teaching
programmes of the Academic Departments of the University
besides being a reservoir for information.
The
Mizoram University Library inherited its collection,
equipments, furniture etc. from North-Eastern Hill
University. The Library had 18,873 books prior to the
establishment of
Mizoram
University.
During
the first two years of existence of Mizoram University
Library, 10,467 books were added to the collection,
bringing the total collection to 29,340.
In the
year 2004-2005, 6738 books were added to the collection,
bringing the total collection to 36078. In addition to
books, subscription of periodicals increased to 158. The
Library has also added bound volumes of periodicals
numbering approximately 3487. The annual expenditure on
periodical subscriptions is now of the order of Rs. 20
lakhs.
The
Library has 568 students, 77 teachers, 25 Research
Scholars, 72 Non- Teaching staff as bonafide members.
During the current year 20,886 books have so far been
borrowed by the users of the MZU Library.
General Collection of the Library along with
Circulation and Technical services are organized on the
second floor and Reference Collections, Bound Volumes of
Periodical Collections and display of current journals
are organized on the first floor. A separate Reading
Room is available for Newspapers and Popular Magazines.
Cataloging cards by AACR2 is in place for filing under
broad subject groupings.
Automation of operations of the library is
under process, and it is expected that Mizoram
University Library will be accessible across the World
Wide Web in the near future.
