Department of Biotechnology

Dr. Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya, Head
Department of Biotechnology,
Mizoram University.
Ph: 0389-2330859/2330861

About us
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2007 with a view to initiate quality teaching and research in the field of Biotechnology. The department offers a two year M. Sc. Degree Course in Biotechnology and research programs leading to M. Phil and Ph. D degrees. Currently, the department has six regular faculty members engaged in teaching and research. To facilitate teaching-learning process and human-resource development in modern research areas of biology, two major facilities (Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility and Advanced State Biotech Hub) have been acquired and maintained by the department with the financial assistance from DBT, New Delhi. The Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) is equipped with high/medium end servers and other computational facilities with 2 Mbps internet connectivity. This also acts as a medium to access 500 free online scientific journals through DBT- Digital e-library consortium (DeLCON) related to modern Biology and Biotechnology. The advanced state Biotech hub is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments that cater to the needs of students and the researchers from not only the University, but also nearby institutes/colleges. All facilities are always open to users.
Most of the faculty members are well supported by research grants from national funding agencies, including DBT, DST, CSIR, ICAR, UGC and, Health Department of Mizoram Government. The research groups in the department regularly publish articles in high quality international and national journals. Over the years, continuous and commited efforts made by the department towards achieving academic excellency has resulted in 136 masters in Biotechnology, 6 with M.Phil. and 15 with doctorate degrees.

Aim: The department aspires to keep improving its infrastructure facilities, including instrumentation, research activities in the modern areas of integrative biology, and contribute to development of skilled man-power for upliftment of educational and socio-economic status of people in the region and the country as a whole.
